The gun-grabbing activists have hit their target in Oregon. Despite the fact that a sheriff from Oregon called it “a terrible law”, for both gun owners and victims of crime, a judge recently ruled that Oregon’s gun law was constitutional.
Townhall published a report on 17 July about the gun law that was passed last week by Oregon voters by a narrow margin. U.S. District Judge Karin Immergut stated that large-capacity magazines were not used to defend oneself and are therefore not protected by the Second Amendment.
Measure 114 imposes new firearm restrictions on Oregonians. Measure 114 includes guidelines for “permit to purchase”. Immergut stated that Measure 114 was in line with the “history and traditions” of the United States regarding the regulation of firearms and other weapons.
Townhall previously reported that Measure 114 would require a firearms permit, training on safety, and fingerprinting from law enforcement to purchase a gun. This law would allow for gun ownership without a license but require a permit in order to purchase one.
Michelle Duncan, the sheriff of Linn County in Iowa, has previously criticized this legislation. Duncan said that “We’ve seen stats that most criminals that commit crimes with firearms don’t get them legally.” She also said that she “Cannot handcuff someone” knowing that there is a dark cloud over the constitutionality of the magazine limit.
The Founding Fathers knew that the Second Amendment was essential to the First Amendment. Laws restricting gun ownership undermine all rights and liberties within the United States.
Noah Webster noted that the supreme power in America could not enforce an unjust law with the sword because “the entire population was armed.”
Thomas Jefferson was particularly insistent that gun control does more harm than good: “[Such laws] disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes… Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man.”
Democrats who support guns often seem to be in favor of policies that encourage violent criminals. They don’t seem to care if law-abiding citizens are put in danger.
